Appointment Information

The advisory commissions advise and assist the California Board of Legal Specialization (CBLS) in the administration of the certification programs for each of the following specialties:

  1. Admiralty and Maritime
  2. Appellate
  3. Bankruptcy
  4. Criminal
  5. Estate Planning, Trust and Probate
  6. Family
  7. Franchise and Distribution
  8. Immigration and Nationality
  9. Legal Malpractice
  10. Taxation
  11. Workers' Compensation Deadline extended to April 30
    One lawyer position open

Each advisory commission:

  • reviews applications for certification and recertification as a legal specialist within that commission's area of specialty;
  • drafts and grades specialist examinations with oversight from professional examination consultants;
  • evaluates and accredits programs and providers of continuing legal education; and
  • otherwise assists the California Board of Legal Specialization in administering the program;

Membership:  Each advisory commission consists of eight lawyer members, at least seven of whom must be certifed specialists in that commission's area of law, and one non-lawyer public member. Each commission meets six times a year and some commission work takes place outside of the meetings. Members serve four-year terms.
